[Intro] Monday morning light fell thin through the blinds Coffee gone cold, and your hand in mine [Verse 1] You were my shadow in every room Silent footsteps, steady as the moon From the first small breath you ever drew I was the whole wide world to you We grew up slow in borrowed time Counting seasons by your eyes and mine Eighteen summers nearly came I still whisper your name the same [Pre-Chorus] They say love knows when to let go But my hands still shake from holding you close [Chorus] So sleep now, my heart, the battle is done You don’t have to be brave anymore, my love I’ll carry the weight that you couldn’t keep Lay your head down, drift into sleep If there’s a place where the light stays on Wait for me there till I come along You were my always, my quiet song Goodbye doesn’t mean you’re gone [Verse 2] It happened fast like a cruel spring rain Two short weeks and everything changed You tried to smile through the hurt somehow Still my girl, still stubborn and proud I memorized the shape of your face Every silver thread that time replaced Old, yes - but you were still mine Till the morning we untwined [Pre-Chorus] I kissed your head and I let you rest Broke my own heart to give you peace instead [Chorus] So sleep now, my heart, the battle is done You don’t have to be brave anymore, my love I’ll carry the ache that you set free You gave every piece of yourself to me If there’s a door where the soft light spills Chase every sunbeam over those hills You were my always, you always will In every quiet, you’re with me still [Bridge] Who will follow me down the hall? Who will answer when I call? It’s just the echo and the air But I still turn - expecting you there Maybe love is a shadow too Staying long after it loses you And if devotion leaves a trace It’s in the silence you still lace [Final Chorus] So run now, my heart, where pain can’t stay Where jaws don’t ache and skies don’t gray I’ll meet you someday past fear and time You’ll be the first light that I find You were my always, my best friend My home from beginning to end So sleep now, love - just sleep You’re still the shadow walking with me [Outro] Monday morning comes and goes But in every sunbeam, heaven shows
Process, tools, and the story behind the release.
This song is an elegy for a dear friend ... most people scoff when I tell them she was my cat. I'd hand-raised her from the day she was born ... then, almost 18 years later she developed cancer of the jaw and I put her to sleep on Monday December 8th, 2025. She was one of those pets that comes along once in a lifetime if you're lucky. This was the least I could do ...
